Society in Mussoorie

Based on the foothills of Garhwal Himalayas, Mussoorie is home for people of multiple cultures and versatile habitation. Like every other place, social discrimination and class division in matters related to financial capability is an obvious situation in Mussoorie too.

Charitable organizations are non-government organizations who work with the aim of social integration and attaining the social issues pertaining in the society. In Mussoorie, there are some of the well renowned and prominent NGOs functioning, focusing on issues related to healthcare, hygiene, sanitation, development, jobs, education, animal care, women empowerment and child welfare.


It may be noted that all the charitable organizations, NGOs and societies are established are registered organizations under society act for working in need of the under-privileged class of the society. They are non-profitable organizations and their work can be monitored as and when required by the government departments.

Tibetan Home Foundation in Mussoorie

Established in 1962, Tibetan Home Foundation started in a small way and had the sole motive of concentrating towards work based on child care and maintaining an orphanage for the impoverished Tibetan refugee children. It was in 1950, that the neighbouring country Tibet fell into a mass destruction by the Chinese people and huge revolt came into being. It was their leader Dalai Lama who came for shelter in India and thousands of Tibetan families followed him. It was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of the country then, was sensitive towards the problems of these Tibetan people and he offered a permanent place to them in Mussoorie. The condition of the Tibetan refugees at that time was unbearable and extremely pathetic.

Thousands of people died in this revolt making families homeless and huge number of children orphaned. It was with the active initiation of Dalai Lama that the Tibetan children found a home where they are offered normal lives. It was with initial seventy five children that Tibetan Home Foundation was established. Today there are three prominent branches of the Tibetan Home Foundation operating at present and they are Mussoorie branch, Rishikesh and Rajpur branch.

Tibetan Home Foundation offers not only a place to stay and food for the homeless children but also quality education for the betterment of the future. A personal dispensary with sufficient number of medical staff is maintained here with pathologist and dental therapist too. In two centres proper old age homes are maintained for the elderly people of age 65 and above.

Garhwal Community Development and Welfare Society

Founded in 1993, Garhwal Community Development and Welfare Society was an initiative of Dr Rajesh Singh whose prime focus was on the healthcare needs of the indigenous population. Since Dr Singh himself worked at various hospitals as a surgeon, he recognized the need of medical treatment among people which forced him to take the initiative. Along with his wife he established Christian Hospital in Chamba on Mussoorie Road and extended medical help to this community for years. It may be noted that Garhwal Community Development and Welfare Society is recognized by Uttarakhand Government and it is recognized as “mother NGO” who are authorized to monitor other NGO in the same field.
